Services
In the late 1920's Clem Howson, a former Collector of Taxes, established C Howson & Co in Stoke on Trent.
The firm grew significantly, particularly in the 1940's when Clem spotted a new opening in the market whereby farmers moved from being taxed on the value of the land they farmed to being taxed on their profits.
More often than not, accounts were prepared on site - very often in the farmers kitchen!
True to our roots, agriculture is still an important sector we serve at Howsons.
However the practice has evolved and works with local, regional, national and international organisations.
Our Mission & Vision Statement recognises that every client is different, with unique characteristics and differing needs and expectations.
We spend a lot of time trying to understand you and your business and your expectations of us, and to apply that in our service delivery.
You can find out more about our service standards under "what to expect from us".
We recognise that servicing your needs involves team-work.
We value the contribution of all our team members and therefore we value them, as people.
Like all accountancy practices, Howsons can prepare financial statements for sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, charities and other business institutions.
We will also calculate their tax liabilities.
Invaluable Thank you for the assistance provided particularly in relation to the transition from UK GAAP to FRS102 and for enabling us to submit the accounts within the prescribed time frame.
As discussed during our work, the rationale behind much of the transition adjustments was unclear and your assistance, which we are aware was often provided outside of normal office hours, proved invaluable and was very much appreciated.
Xero is the market leader in cloud accounting software and through its beautiful, simple design, it makes cloud accounting easy and accessible, with time saving tools and features to improve the day to day running your business.
Cloud accounting means keeping your records on cloud-based software.
Many competitor practices are highly prescriptive about which platform(s) they will work with.
Although for small businesses we work closely with, and commonly recommend, Xero, we will happily work with other software including QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent and Zoho.
Every business needs to keep records of the transactions they undertake.
The nature and extent of those records is dependent on the nature of the business.
For example, under Making Tax Digital VAT - registered businesses are required to keep their records and file their VAT returns digitally.
Limited companies are required to keep registers of their members, directors etc.
These records need to be sufficient to prepare reliable accounts and comply with legislative requirements.
In general, you will need to keep these records for the current year and the previous six years.
