The origins of Dorrell Oliver can be traced back to the early 20th Century with the birth of Dan Dorrell in 1903. His family home was what are now the offices of the current firm in Monk Street Abergavenny. Both Dan and his brother Bill were born here, Bill was born in 1913. Dan R Dorrell became an accountant, setting up the firm in 1928, firstly practising from offices in another building in Monk Street, close to St. Marys Chambers.
He was later joined by his brother Bill. Mr Oliver was born in 1914, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Newport in 1937 and joined Messrs Dorrell after a short spell as an accountancy tutor in Newport South Wales. The partnership of Dorrell, Oliver and Co was formally established in 1947 and moved to its current premises around that date.
In the subsequent years, the practice expanded with additional accountants joining as partners, with Brian Butterworth FCA, Fred Utting FCA, and Huw Thomas FCA, joining in the 1960's and enjoying long careers until their respective retirements.
