Services
Every business needs to keep a record of their income and expenditure.
This is called bookkeeping in the accounting world.
As soon as you have the intention to start working for yourself, you should keep paper records of every financial transaction.
Many people overlook the importance of bookkeeping until they start receiving demands from HMRC for tax returns.
They then start to panic and hand everything over to an accountant, who at this vulnerable time usually charges very high fees to meet your deadlines.
You will now have a responsibility to calculate the tax and national insurance contributions (NIC) of your employee, and then withhold this from their pay and submit this to HMRC on their behalf.
Tax and national insurance is usually calculated on a monthly basis and payments are made to HMRC by the 19th of the following month, or the 22nd if paying electronically.
It is important to make sure figures are calculated correctly, so that you make the correct payments.
By not calculating the tax and NIC correctly, you may pay more than you have to.
You must register for VAT when your turnover for the previous 12 months has gone over a specific limit - called the 'VAT threshold'.
This is currently, fixed at 81,000, for the period of 2014/2015.
You must register for VAT if your revenue has reached this threshold or if you believe your turnover will soon go over this limit.
Your invoices must include your VAT Registration Number and you must start to submit VAT returns to HMRC.
VAT must be accurately accounted for throughout your bookkeeping and then a payment amount must be calculated and then paid to HMRC.
These accounting templates & forms will help you in the process of managing your business.
These free resources are available for you to download and use for your own personal development or business, and to teach or train others.
The templates are mainly in PDF format.
Please be aware that these accounts templates may not be suitable for your business and you need to judge whether they are appropriate to your business and circumstances.
Bookkeeping is the process of recording and categorising your business income and expenditure.
Maintaining your books whilst running your business can become a very time consuming task.
A good bookkeeper can manage your accounting systems and produce for you vital decision making information.
By hiring a bookkeeper, you can rely on their expertise of accounting and expect that accounting policies are adhered to.
Bookkeeping can be done by business owners themselves if they are confident enough to do so, however it would not be recommended without any training.
